Peanuts for the Circus

Sometime between the two world wars, my grandfather had a fountain syrup business in Brooklyn. My dad used to make deliveries to the ubiquitous candy stores and soda fountains of the borough by hose and wagon.

They were always looking for other ways to supplement their income.

My dad told me about one time the circus was coming to the city and they got into the bag peanut business. They bought bulk roasted peanuts.

And bought preprinted peanut bags.

Filled bag after bag with a small scoop of peanuts  and stapled them closed.
